Worldwide, at least 25 million babies suffer from flatulence and/or colic in their first 6 months of life. The problem of flatulence and colic is more pronounced in pre-term babies. As a natural response to the discomfort that flatulence brings, babies cry. Confused parents have sleepless nights, their anxiety builds into stress and ultimately, the stress into frustration. The parents can suffer from depression and sometimes, for the mother it can even mean early weaning of breast milk. In the worst case scenario, the baby can have permanent brain damage (Shaken Baby Syndrome). The current solutions are costly, ineffective, require medications or invasive approaches, and these solutions can even worsen the symptoms sometimes. The most efficient technique to reduce the baby's discomfort requires sessions of Kangaroo care for up to three hours, placing an enormous time burden!
Rock-N-Roo is a non-invasive medical device capable of relieving flatulence and colic. This is achieved by mimicking the parental care and by providing babies with a feeling of comfort, warmth and security. Furthermore, with this hands-free device, parents are still able to carry on with their daily activities without any anxiety about baby's flatulence or colic. We envision the device to serve as an add-on and not as a replacement for parental care.
