KUL / Energy for refugees
Mission
To create sustainable sources of income and jobs in refugee camps, by turning plastic waste into a valuable raw material. Impact in the present and future, by working with grassroots organisations. KUL will divide profits between hosting RLO, EFR and reinvesting in KUL for the creation of new workshops in diverse camps.
The challenge
Energy justice and sustainable income for Kakuma refugee camp: Lack of electrification in refugee camps (around 90% of refugees in 2019 had no access to electricity). Lack of job opportunities in refugee camps (refugees in Kenya cannot work outside the camp and the economy of the camp is almost dormant with minimum capital coming in. Lack of waste management, Kakuma has no waste management hence a “city” of around 300,000 people is infested with plastic residues,.
The solution
Create modular circular economy workshops that recycle plastic waste to create water flasks. As the board members of energy for refugees we want to expand our project by creating a sustainable source of income in Kakuma, this will work through a synergy between Ki4Bli, FRADI ( both RLOs), Plasticpreneur (small plastic recycling machines, has worked in Kakuma before) and Energy for refugees. The project consists of electrifying a school and workshop where the flasks will be produced, creating jobs throughout the value chain.
