LiNDA
Mission
Detect. Prevent. Protect.
The challenge
The problem with the future of cycling is threefold. Development of bicycle safety is neglected compared to other modes of transportation. Cars have seen the development of LiDAR mapping but there has been little effort to translate these for cyclists. Cyclists are increasingly sharing lanes with motorised vehicles creating an unsafe cycling environment. Despite safety policy efforts, annual casualties increased by ~50% 2021-2023. AVs endanger cyclists more than human drivers. AVs increase accident risk in poor visibility. AVs cause 525% more accidents during dawn/dusk, 11% more in rain and hit cyclists from behind, in 96% of conflicts.
The solution
Our solution is LiNDA, an intelligent e-bike helmet that enhances cyclist safety through dual protection: active detection and passive visibility. Six rear-mounted LiDAR sensors continuously scan for fast-approaching vehicles, eliminating blind spots and translating their distance and direction into intuitive vibration feedback. In addition, a retroreflective coating significantly improves the rider’s visibility to both human drivers and autonomous vehicles, even in adverse weather conditions, crucial since rain can reduce cyclist detection by up to 30%. By combining smart sensing with passive reflectiveness, LiNDA increases awareness without distracting the rider from the road ahead.
